Background of the Study
Traditional Nigerian music represents a rich cultural heritage that encapsulates the diverse histories, languages, and traditions of the country. However, this invaluable resource is at risk due to the degradation of physical media and the erosion of oral traditions. At the Federal College of Education in Zuba, Abuja, the development of a digital archive for traditional Nigerian music is being undertaken to preserve and disseminate this cultural legacy. The digital archive will serve as a comprehensive repository that collects, digitizes, and categorizes traditional musical recordings, lyrics, and performances. By employing state-of-the-art digital preservation techniques, the project aims to ensure that these cultural artifacts are accessible to future generations and can be easily shared with a global audience (Ibrahim, 2023). Digital archiving not only safeguards the music from physical deterioration but also enhances its accessibility through online platforms. This initiative leverages advanced metadata tagging, search functionalities, and interactive playback features to provide an engaging user experience. Recent technological advancements have demonstrated that digital archives can play a critical role in cultural preservation by ensuring that traditional art forms are documented and studied extensively (Chinwe, 2024). The archive is intended to support academic research, cultural education, and community engagement by providing educators, students, and enthusiasts with an invaluable resource for exploring Nigeria’s musical heritage. Furthermore, the project aims to collaborate with local musicians, cultural institutions, and government agencies to enrich the archive’s content and ensure its relevance. The background of this study highlights the urgent need to protect traditional Nigerian music from extinction and underscores the potential of digital technology to revolutionize cultural preservation and education (Afolabi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Traditional Nigerian music, a cornerstone of the country’s cultural identity, faces significant threats due to the loss of physical recordings, the fading of oral traditions, and the lack of systematic preservation efforts. At the Federal College of Education in Zuba, Abuja, there is a growing concern that much of this heritage is at risk of being lost forever (Ibrahim, 2023). Existing methods of preserving traditional music are often fragmented and inaccessible, relying on outdated storage mediums and localized collections that fail to reach a broader audience. This situation is exacerbated by inadequate funding, limited technical expertise, and the rapid pace of technological change. Although digital archiving offers a promising solution by enabling the systematic preservation and easy dissemination of traditional music, its implementation is hindered by challenges such as high initial costs, issues of digital rights management, and the need for standardized cataloging practices (Chinwe, 2024). Moreover, the lack of awareness about the importance of cultural preservation among key stakeholders further limits support for such initiatives. This study seeks to address these challenges by developing a robust digital archive that consolidates traditional Nigerian music into a single, accessible platform. The research will evaluate the technical feasibility of digital preservation methods, assess the impact on cultural education and research, and propose best practices for maintaining and updating the archive. Through collaboration with local cultural experts and technologists, the study aims to create a sustainable model for digital archiving that preserves Nigeria’s musical heritage for future generations (Afolabi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
• To develop and implement a digital archive for traditional Nigerian music.
• To evaluate the impact of the archive on cultural preservation and accessibility.
• To propose best practices for the sustainable management of digital cultural resources.
Research Questions
• How effective is the digital archive in preserving traditional Nigerian music?
• What impact does the archive have on cultural education and research?
• What challenges must be addressed to ensure the archive’s sustainability?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the urgent need to preserve traditional Nigerian music through a digital archive, ensuring cultural heritage is safeguarded and accessible (Ibrahim, 2023). The research provides a model for integrating modern technology with cultural preservation, benefiting educators, researchers, and communities across Nigeria (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the development and evaluation of a digital archive for traditional Nigerian music at the Federal College of Education, Zuba, Abuja. It focuses solely on digital preservation and access, not on other forms of cultural heritage.
